Frequently Asked Questions
The Exchange Street at Burville Road Intersection Improvements is a Phase I Engineering and Environmental Study. The purpose is to address traffic operation and safety issues at the intersection through a roundabout design. Multiple alternatives analyzed based on their traffic operations, safety, environmental and right-of-way impacts, and public feedback.
The project is currently in Phase I, which is the preliminary engineering and environmental studies. Phase I involves preliminary engineering and environmental studies, and typically lasts 24 to 36 months. During this Phase, issues and concerns are identified, solutions are proposed, and public comment is collected. The second Public Information Meeting was held on April 30, 2025.
In a Phase I study, the project team assesses all the potential impacts of improving the intersection to select the alternatives. This process includes incorporating public input. It is important to get involved and provide your feedback to contribute to roadway improvements in your community.
Roundabout alternatives are being considered for the project, as roundabouts have several benefits over signalized intersections, including:
- Safety: Roundabouts are designed to reduce traffic speeds which helps lower the risk of serious crashes.
- Efficiency: Roundabouts can improve traffic flow, particularly during peak hours. They eliminate the need for traffic signals, which can cause unnecessary wait times during off peak hours.
- Environmental benefits: Because roundabouts improve traffic flow, they can reduce the amount of time that vehicles are idling, which can help reduce air pollution.
- Cost savings: Roundabouts can be less expensive to construct and maintain than traditional intersections with traffic signals.
- Aesthetics: Roundabouts can be designed to include landscaping and other decorative features, which can enhance the appearance of the intersection and the surrounding area.
